Fuel for Change is the story of Haiti’s unsustainable appetite for charcoal – and this appetite is deadly to Haitians and the environment. Incredibly, nearly all of Haiti’s 10 million people cook with charcoal… that means 97% of Haiti’s forest cover has been cut down to meet this demand. Deforestation, flash-floods, indoor air pollution… Haiti is at a crossroads… can it change course? USAID thinks it can though programs that help Haitians ween themselves off charcoal and use alternative fuels and stoves.
